DIY HDTV Antenna Instructions Made Easy!

Create a diy HDTV antenna in ten easy steps. Good with your hands? This may be the way to go for you.

Creating your own HDTV antenna is not necessarily the difficult or expensive task you may think it is. If you are a do it yourself guy (or gal) then you will love the building process plus the incentive to save money.

Oh one other thing to note is that building a diy HDTV antenna means you will be using parts that are pretty much available in your own house. So when I say it’s cheap I really mean it!

In this article I will show you how to build what’s called a DB4 antenna. If you don't know what DB4 means then there’s no need to panic. It’s just a type of design used for HDTV antennas.

What Do I need for the DIY HDTV Antenna project?

Well, you will need a bunch of things! But the good part is that most will be readily available and others can be cheaply bought from the hardware store. Here is a list of the materials you’ll need for this project.

  • A rectangular board with cross section of 2”X3” and length measuring around 21.5”
  • Screws
  • Washers
  • Wire (Copper wire)
  • Reflector grid (can be picked up from local hardware store. It’s very cheap and available.) and a Balun ( A device with a coax plug on one side, two wires with screw holes on the other. They were commonly used to attach old TV's to coax antenna's (or cable) Radio Shack has them.
  • Drill
  • Screw Driver
  • Wire cutters
  • Pliers

Create a DIY HDTV antenna in ten easy steps.

1. Create markings on the board. Leave 2” from one end of the board along the length and mark two points along the width approximately 1” apart.

2. Mark two more points along the length after a distance of about 5 and a quarter inches. Repeat the process till you have a total of eight markings.

3. Take the drill and drill holes at the markings. You should drill eight holes on the board.

4. Take the wire and using the wire cutters cut it into 8 pieces each measuring about 14 inches.

5. Bend each wire into a V-Shape with each arm measuring 7” insuring that the two ends of the V are 3 inches apart.

6. Take the screws and washers and fix one V-shaped wire to one hole such that the free ends of the wire face away from the board.

7. Repeat this for all the eight locations.

8. Now connect the two connection wires in a diagonal zigzag fashion. Ensure that the wires do not touch each other.

9. The next step is to attach the reflectors to the other side of the board. It is important that the reflector does not touch the V wire.

10. After that attach the balun.
