(Reviewed 11/16/06)Flat panel TVs are all the rage it seems and flat panel TV reviews are everywhere. Just what is all the hoopla surrounding these shiny new toys? With a larger screen area, high resolution picture, a sleek, artsy look and super easy set-up, it is easy to see how people are getting excited.
Flat panel TV reviews of the Westinghouse LVM-47w1 LCD TV
The sleek design of this 47 inch LCD TV gives it a contemporary art feel. It measures 46 (W) by 31 (H) by 9 (D) inches and sits on top of its included stand. The Westinghouse LVM-47w1 weighs 79 pounds and has a resolution of 1,920x1,080. This LCD TV can display both 1080i and 1080p sources without scaling. All other sources, such as 720p HDTV and standard-definition content, are scaled to fit the available pixels.
The starkness of the screen is impressive. No front panel controls for this puppy! All that resides on the front of the LVM-47W1 is an obscure Westinghouse logo that lights up when the TV is turned on.
The speakers are discreetly placed under the front bezel instead of the traditional side placement. While this placement is great for fitting the unit in TV furniture and on TV stands, it doesn’t work out so well when it comes to audio. Who cares, as you see in all of our flat panel reviews, if you’re going to invest in a system as cool as the LVM-47W1, you are probably going to wire it for sound any way.
One of the worst remotes in our flat panel TV reviews
The remote is really annoying. Popular buttons are indistinguishable and there are many unecessary buttons for a tuner that's not even supplied. On the plus side you can control virtually everything on the system from the supplied remote. Tune, operate, tweak the color, do it all through your remote.
It’s all in the image…
While the picture quality may not be as sharp and crisp as, say, an analog TV, it does stand up on its own right. Without all the technical jargon here, let it suffice to say that the picture is really good and, for the most part, clear and sharp as we’ve seen in most our flat panel reviews.
It plays video, DVD, cable, you name it. The color quality is very true to life while black was a little challenge at times. But with a little adjustment, all should be fine.
Conclusion: There's not a lot of extras, such as a tuner or picture controls but it does have decent image quality, cool look (hey it's an LCD TV) and nice performance. Could you ask for anything more at this low price? With the money you save you can buy an external audio system you'll rock on! The LVM-47W1 has enough features that will make it fun to own.
Once you get past the little bumps in the road, (styling could be better, the remote needs big time improvement, slight picture color problems and a little motion smear with fast motion) you can fully enjoy your system and get the most out of it.
This may not be like most other flat panel TV reviews, it doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but hopefully you will walk away from these flat panel TV reviews knowing that this flat panel TV is a value LCD.
