The Many Directions That an HDTV Antenna Can Take

HDTV antennas actually do not exist. So why then are we even attempting to write about it?

While antennas cannot differentiate between a high definition or regular signal, there are specific features that do work best for high definition signal reception and not just qualified because “HDTV” is attached to the product name. In fact, these features are a more important MUST HAVE than a products claim to be optimized for “HDTV”.

For example, for outdoor antennas, you have two choices of directional or omni-directional (otherwise known as multi-directional).

Directional antennas can capture signals from even faraway towers but only if it is aimed at a specific direction. As a result, it works best if you direct a directional antenna to where towers are clustered to receive a stronger signal or only a few stations might come in clearly.

However, since it won’t always be the case that signals come from one direction, omni-directional or multi-directional antennas will let you adjust and receive signals from various directions.

HDTV indoor antennas work best if your location is close to the transmitting towers source. More often than not, it will still need careful adjustment to tweak the reception every time you change a channel.

Therefore, when we go through HDTV antenna reviews, the best ones have tended to be outdoor models. In fact, there have been only a few indoor models that impress consumers.

All in all, here are the HDTV antennas that top our Best HDTV antennas list:

DIY Antenna

On the other hand, you do have the option for DIY Antenna which will save you significantly more money. For one thing, you can skip costly cable and satellite TV while still enjoying digital programming that is free.

Furthermore, you can even use parts lying around your house. If you see the benefits of DIY and can spare the time and put in the effort, look for the DB4 design which is a general use design that accepts HDTV signals in most environments.

If you do opt for the less than popular Antenna for HDTV Indoor, you can still follow the below guidelines to improve your HDTV reception.

First, indoor antennas should only be considered if you are located less than 20 miles from a broadcast tower. In some cases, you might get away with using only a UHF antenna. In other situations, you will require a VHF antenna as well like the standard rabbit ear antennas.

Second, always point the antenna in the direction of the broadcast tower and place it where it is not obstructed, such as a window.

Third, avoid amplified antennas that will restrict the location of your antenna.

Last but not least, don’t expect the perfect signal right away. It might take a couple of days to play around and adjust your antennas position before finding the strongest signal.

Although it seems like too much trouble, the fact that you will be receiving the best quality picture available for free is a great enough motivator!
