This extremely expensive Samsung UN55C8000
LED HDTV has better black levels, accurate color, numerous picture controls, sleek styling and a very slim inch-deep panel. This is done by using edge lighting.
Samsung used an extra layer of LEDs and moved it to the sides of the screen. This edge-lighting causes some issues with picture uniformity. When you're lighting up an entire set with a string of LED lights along the edges there's only so far that the diffuser panel can go to get a uniform backlight.
Using this form of backlighting the LEDs are fixed to the four sides of the TV. The light is then projected into the middle of the TV. This “edge-lit” technology is the most common LED technology used today. Like most other LCDs/LEDs HDTVs Samsung’s off angle viewing is not that good. It yields lighter pictures as you veer away front center front viewing.
On the plus side this LED HDTV by Samsung offers excellent streaming video with widget content via a nicely integrated Apps platform. Its App platform is a winner and is cutting edge. This TV boast Samsung’s best LCD picture quality specs for this year.
Its 2D to 3D conversion system works very well but there are times in 3D mode when you can get some crosstalk (left eye image visible by the right eye, which leads to ghosting). All of this being said we just feel the Samsung UN55C8000
still needs work.
It’s just too expensive for us to recommend and although it’s 3D compatible you’ll need to buy the glasses (they’re not cheap) as an extra. Its 2D picture quality (in the end that’s what’s most important) does not stack up well enough to justify its price. Some Amazon reviewers reported complaints similar to this:
“We found that we spend a great deal of time on (fiddling with the settings) and that is the jerkiness/judder of movies. While most movies on bluray, directv and dvd look phenomenal most of the time, about every 10 min or so, you will see a jerky scene - lasts about 2-3 seconds, that appears unnatural. Then the movie just continues looking great. 10 minutes later you see it again.
I've read that if you turn off the judder and auto motion plus, this may fix the problem, but again, then you have to switch all your settings every time you switch between sports and movies.”
Keep in mind that in this size this is a first generation LED HDTV by Samsung. So there’s inherent risk! Also if you do decide to buy this be sure to get the latest firmware update that improves its 1080p performance.
