The Sharp 37GD6U Aquos LCD TV reviewed

Let's see how the Sharp 37GD6U LCD TV stacks up against other LCD TVs in the 37 inch screen size.

The Sharp Aqous displayed both SD (standard TV) and HD (high def) great straight out of the box (without using an Avia calibration disc for some fine tuning). This LCD TV is a true HDTV.

In other words you can "plug and play" these LCD sets with any HDTV-capable Cable TV system, with no need for a separate set top box, and no worries about compatibility issues.

The Sharp 37GD6U includes a full range of HDTV-capable video inputs, including HDMI, DVI-I, and HD component video. A new PC Card slot allows you to record and view JPEG still images and MPEG-4 video on a PC Card.

Colors are good, blacks are good, doesn't seem to have a push from any color. The SD picture was good to very good (sharpness off by a tad). We got the best SD picture from the component video input. The HD, like in most sets, was excellent.

With HD there was no difference between HDMI/DVI and component. There is slight "image lag" when watching sports or fast moving action. (if you really look for it). Aquos has a sharp, clear picture with no scan lines visible.

The Sharp 37GD6U is more like a movie screen than its competitors. It has richer color and there's much more visible detail. The Aquos 408i video line processing produces good pictures from SD material. Lettering and text are excellent on the Aquos. The Sharp 37GD6U was almost noise free, probably due to noise filtering set to "on".

The Sharp 37GD6U has a smart stretch mode. It works very well with one caveat. The stretch mode widens the picture and removes sidebars. It also remove a few lines from the top and bottom of the picture to maintain shapes. Some HDTV format use 4:3 aspect ratio instead of the 16:9.

This means you can't use smart-stretch to fill the screen without losing resolution. Stretch modes only work on 480i material. Therefore you are losing resolution when you switch to 480p to view HD material. It seems that HD material is un-stretchable.

The Sharp 37GD6U is user friendly and easy to operate. It has a great picture and the brand has consistent quality. In the 37 inch class it's one of the best performers. As with any high priced TV set you should buy an extended in home warranty.
