The Sharp Aquos LC-37G4U continues in the tradition of the Sharp LCD TVs

(Reviewed 10-9-05) The Sharp Aquos LC-37G4U is the latest standout in the Aquos line of LCD-based HDTVs. Sharp LCD TVs have consistently delivered a combination of good image quality and features that make them the LCD benchmark.

Here's some other reviews of Sharp LCD TVs:

Of course since Sharp LCD TVs are pretty much the premium in LCD TVs they’re going to make you pay a premium to get one of these babies.

I've always been a big believer in Consumer Reports magazine and generally follow their recommendations. They're always looking out for you the consumer.

In the Dec/04 issue (pp.18-19) Consumer Reports has this to say about buying electronics at Amazon. "In our survey, no retailer received topmarks across the board for price, selection, and service. Amazon.com did receive top marks in the categories in which it was rated-the only outlet to do so.....Consumer Reports readers gave Amazon.com very high marks."

You even save on sales tax (not for long though if the goverment has its way). Here are links to some other Sharp LCD TVs

Let's continue our review of this Sharp Aquos LC-37G4U. This Sharp Aquos has a separate I/O box connected to a single I/O cable. The I/O box is an external video processor that has all of the Aquos video and audio connections.

The advantage of the separate I/O box is that it hides the cable clutter behind your component rack. The front of the Aquos I/O box accommodates analog inputs.

The Sharp Aquos LC-37G4U has two component video inputs, a single HDMI input and DVI-I for connecting a PC. There’s only one S-Video input, so standard-definition devices would need to connect via composite video.

Unfortunately this is one of the Sharp LCD TVs without an ATSC tuner and it doesn’t support CableCARD. You'll need an external ATSC tuner box, a satellite/cable box, or a PC with an HDTV card to get the HDTV onto this Sharp Aquos LCD TV.

Aquos uses a light sensor to adjust picture settings according to the amount of light present in the room. When the lights are off, the Aquos dials down the brightness and makes a color adjustment. Like other Sharp LVD TVs the Sharp Aquos LC-37G4U has a PC Card slot where you can plug in a card reader for digital photos.

The remote is long and has many buttons (it can control four other devices) and it makes navigating Sharp's very detailed menu system easy. The panel's native resolution is Wide XGA (1366-by-768). This means it scales 720p or 1080i HDTV content to its native resolution.

The Aquos's video processor does a very good job of keeping images sharp without exaggerating edge details. The Sharp Aquos LC-37G4U needs no professional calibration out of the box.

It requires very little color, brightness, and contrast adjustments. It delivered vivid color and bright images but even Sharp LCD TVs (like all LCD TVs) can’t match the deep blacks of the Panasonic plasmas.

The Sharp Aquos LCD TVs panel technology and excellent video processing allows the 37" Aquos to deliver HDTV, SDTV and DVD movie content equally well. The Sharp Aquos LC-37G4U does very good job of handling high-action sequences-once a sore spot for LCD TVs.

Beautiful image quality has become the hallmark of the Sharp Aquos LCD TVs and the Sharp Aquos LC-37G4U is leading the pack. The separate I/O box hides the cable clutter and its skinny profile allows for installations in tight quarters.

On the downside the missing ATSC tuner, CableCARD, buttony remote and single S-video connection are not enough to detract from considering this LCD TV.

You can find the next Aquos generation, the Sharp Aquos LC-37D5U LCD TV at Amazon. The Sharp Aquos LC-37D5U LCD comes with an ATSC tuner.

The Sharp Aquos LC-37G4U is continuing in the tradition of excellence that we’ve seen with the Sharp Aquos LCD TVs. If you have the money this is the one to buy.
