The Sharp LC 32GD4U. Is this LCD TV really the best?

The Sharp LC 32GD4U  dimensions: 38”W x 22 “H x 4”D weight 46 pounds (with the stand is 12 inches deep and 55 pounds)

Many people believe Sharp is the LCD industry leader.

Sharp was the first manufacturer to completely commit itself to the LCD market, perhaps the only one who has done so to such an extent. Their brand-new Kameyama factory in Japan is considered LCD state of the art.

It seems Sharp has an LCD in every screen size. The Sharp LC 32GD4U LCD TV is their best 32 inch LCD TV.

These are other model's by Sharp: The LC-32D7U, LC-32D5U, LC-32GA5U ,LC-32GD6U ,LC-32GD4U and LC-32G4U. The 7 series is the latest and has a new cablecard. The differences between the other models relates to speaker placement (side/bottom) and removability of the speakers.

For example, the LC-32GA5U shares the same glass but comes with tacky, non-removable speakers. We believe the Sharp LC-32GD4U is the better TV.

Sharp jammed an array of features into the its attractive four-inch frame.

  • side-mounted speakers (detachable)
  • tilt/swivel stand (detachable)
  • CableCard slot (this feature might not be compatible with your local cable co.)
  • built-in over-the-air HDTV tuner
  • 1-bit digital audio amplifier for accurate sound reproduction

It’s has one of the best PQ’s (picture quality) in the 32 inch screen size  and does not require an external media box to house its inputs and other features. If you want a separate box can buy the LC32G4U version. The LC32G4U has dual NTSC tuners and an external AVC box for video/PC connection which connects via a single 10' cable to the panel.

The Sharp LC 32GD4U's 32-inch (diagonal) screen is composed of 1,366x768 pixels which qualifies it as a true HDTV. Although the Sharp showed red push out of the box you can adjust the color-management to get it right.

I think the first thing you want to do with a Sharp LCD is dial down the color setting: We set it to -5. We set the backlight and brightness to STD (right in the middle). The contrast is set to 0 (totally to the left).

The Sharp LC 32GD4U LCD TV real standout feature is its ability to reproduce black. If you haven’t read it (or seen it) both plasmas and LCD TVs have a difficult time with this important color.

If you properly adjust the Sharp’s picture you can get an acceptable black. It will never be as good as the blacks on CRT-based sets but for an LCD TV it's one of the best we’ve seen.

There’s no external tuner needed to receive over-the-air digital and high-def TV. The remote’s not intuitive and you’ll need to flip open a door to access some needed keys. On the plus side the remote can be programmed to operate other components plus it has a backlight.

Thankfully the onscreen icons are intuitive and do cover all needed functions. The manual is comprehensive and easy to digest if you want to learn more about the Sharp's features.

The Sharp LC 32GD4U also has side-by-side PIP with standard-definition sources, like many other LCD TVs you can't change aspects with high-def sources.

This LCD TV has an excellent range of advanced picture adjustments particularly for color. And it has more connections than any other we've seen in the 32 inch size.

The digital inputs include….

  • two FireWire
  • one HDMI
  • one RF (for digital cable and over-the-air)
  • one DVI

The analog inputs include….

  • two for broadband component video/composite video
  • one for composite A/V with S-Video
  • two for RF
  • one monitor A/V output

Overall the Sharp LC 32GD4U is an excellent LCD TV in this screen size. It’s loaded with features, delivers very good blacks (for an LCD TV), is an attractive TV set and most importantly displays excellent PQ.
